Henry E Ubelacker - Butcher 133 Nelson Street Stratford, ON 1872
Henry E. Ubelacker bought the vacant property from George Forman and built the house at 140 Nelson Street in 1872. When the numbers of all of the buildings in Stratford were officially assigned in 1907, the address was changed to 133 Nelson Street.
Henry was born to Christian Ubelacker (February 17, 1815 - March 27, 1864) and Johanna (April 1817 - May 27, 1875) in Saxony, Germany on March 21, 1838. He had a brother Fred (1844-1863) and a sister Paulana (1848-1869). The family came to Canada in 1849.
In the 1861 census, Henry and his family were listed as living in Stratford. His father, Christian, was listed as a butcher. In the city directories of 1876 and 1880-1881, Henry Ubelacker and George Larkworthy owned a butcher market at 45-59 Market Square at the corner of Wellington Street. By 1898-1900, the name was listed as Ubelacker & Son Butcher Market, and Henry's son Fred had begun working there. After Henry's death the business continued in the same location, but the name was changed to Fish & Meats in 1930, and Fred's sons Warren and Gordon were listed as salesmen for the business. After Fred's death on September 8, 1943, the business continued as Ubelacker Market Fresh & Cured Meats, operated by Fred's sons Warren and Gordon. In the 1955 city directory the business had changed to Ubelacker TV & Appliances. By 1957 the business was no longer listed.
Henry married Jane Glendinning (born April 15, 1837) in Streetsville, Peel, Ontario on May 18, 1865. They had a daughter, Ada M., on February 29, 1868, a son, Fredrick (Fred), on May 29, 1869, and another daughter, Lillian May, on October 30, 1873. All three children were born in Stratford. Fred married Mary Alice McBrien (born September 25, 1866 in Auburn, Huron County) on October 15, 1891 in Stratford. Fred and Mary Alice had a son, Harry Norman, a daughter, Shirley Marie, and sons, Warren Eldon and Gordon Fredrick. Fred lived next door at 123 Nelson Street. Lillian May married William Lorne Small on October 28, 1897. They moved to Michigan and had a son, Charles Glendinning Small, (January 23, 1898-October 1959). In 1917 Lillian returned to Stratford with her son Charles after she and William divorced, and was listed as living at 133 Nelson Street in 1921. Jane, her mother, died on August 19, 1917. Henry died of senility on August 6, 1926 at the age of 88. In 1927, Mrs. L. Small (Lillian) was listed as the owner of the house. Lillian died February 3, 1937. She was buried alongside her parents in Avondale Cemetery. Ada married Edward William Elligson.
